1,2-Hexanediol is widely used in cosmetic-grade applications, primarily for moisturizing, antibacterial properties, and as a preservative. It is particularly suitable for skincare products requiring hydration and antibacterial effects.

Moisturizing effect
Although 1,2-hexanediol has less moisturizing effect than glycerin, its lower viscosity makes it more refreshing to use, without leaving a greasy feel on the skin. It helps the skin absorb and retain moisture, resulting in plump and radiant skin.

Antibacterial capability
1,2-Hexanediol exhibits outstanding antibacterial capabilities, capable of disrupting microbial cell membranes and effectively inhibiting bacterial growth. Studies have shown that even at a concentration of 2.0%, 1,2-hexanediol can completely eliminate Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by the next day. However, its bactericidal effect is weaker against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, typically requiring a longer duration to achieve eradication.

Safety and mildness
1,2-Hexanediol is virtually non-irritating to human skin under normal use, but it exhibits strong ocular irritation, necessitating eye contact avoidance during application. Due to its mildness and safety profile, 1,2-hexanediol is commonly employed as an alternative preservative, particularly suitable for sensitive skin care products.

Replace traditional preservatives
As consumers increasingly seek "preservative-free" products, 1,2-hexanediol is often used as an alternative to traditional preservatives such as parabens and formaldehyde releasers due to its excellent antibacterial effects. When combined with other ingredients like hydroxyacetophenone, 1,2-pentanediol, octanediol, and ethylhexylglycerin, it provides more comprehensive protection.
