Moisturizing Effect 
1,2-Octanediol functions as both an effective humectant and an antibacterial agent, exerting moisturizing and emollient effects. It enhances skin hydration by increasing cutaneous water content and mitigating transepidermal water loss. 

Preservative and Antibacterial Effects 
1,2-Octanediol exhibits excellent miscibility with a broad spectrum of chemical substances, characterized by potent antibacterial activity and low irritancy. Thus, it can be incorporated as a preservative-humectant in "preservative-free" formulations. Its mild preservative efficacy in cosmetics stems from its unique antibacterial mechanism. It may be utilized either as a standalone "preservative-free" agent or in combination with other compounds to replace traditional preservatives. When added to cosmetics as an antibacterial agent, it forms a protective barrier to impede microbial invasion and proliferation. Specifically, it disrupts the microbial cell membrane structure, leading to the leakage of intracellular contents and subsequent microbial inactivation. Additionally, it inhibits microbial respiration and energy metabolism, further compromising microbial viability.
